From Policy to Practice: Indonesia’s Blueprint for Biodiversity and Sustainable Prosperity

·

As Indonesia prepares for the 2025 International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), it is thought that it is pioneering a holistic conservation strategy under Law No. 32/2024 and the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2025-2045. It is believed that this strategy aligns ecological restoration, scientific innovation, and economic resilience with the theme Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development. At the heart of this endeavour is the National Red List Index (RLI), which meticulously tracks the threat levels of species. In addition, there are a number of approaches that could be implemented to bolster climate resilience and ecosystem stability. These include habitat restoration, species recovery, rescue and release programmes, habitat and population management, and invasive species management.

It is thought that the preservation of genetic diversity for flagship species, along with captive breeding and bioprospecting initiatives, has the potential to unlock added value from biodiversity utilisation, including its medicinal, cosmetic, food, energy and fuel uses. This, in turn, could help to create a sustainable bioeconomy that benefits communities.

It is Indonesia’s vision to embed nature’s value into economic decisions, with the aim of demonstrating that biodiversity stewardship can be the cornerstone of national prosperity by 2045. In alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the goals of the ASEAN, the nation demonstrates the potential for harmonising ecological integrity with human well-being by means of policy innovation, community empowerment and pivotal bioeconomic foresight.
